Pauline Bickerton, is a collaborative contemporary artist whose work explores the intersubjective encounter through sculpture, performance and installation. As primarily a sculptor, she is interested in setting up collaborations with fellow artists and participants to explore how an abstract concept can be transformed into a literal space of operations, a pragmatic way of making and showing, talking and being.
The audience is envisaged as a community. Rather than the artwork being an encounter between a viewer and an object, it enables an intersubjective encounter. Through these encounters, meaning is elaborated collectively, rather than in the space of individual consumption.
Her intention is to pose the question ‘does this work permit me to enter into dialogue? Could I exist and how, in the space it defines’.
There is an interest in the folds in social systems; interruptions in internal functioning; irregularities in rigid structures. From these gaps, a questioning can occur; openings and possibilities of an alternative reality can exist.
The practice is not about social engagement for engagement’s sake; but is more focussed at creating meaningful intersubjective encounters which reveal and question preconceived thinking or rigidity of perspective.
